Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
