A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
